Parent and Peer Attachments in Adolescence and Paternal Postpartum Mental Health: Findings From the ATP Generation 3 Study.Jacqui A. Macdonald, Christopher J. Greenwood, Primrose Letcher, Elizabeth A. Spry, Kayla Mansour, Jennifer E. McIntosh, Kimberly C. Thomson, Camille Deane, Ebony J. Biden, Ben Edwards, Delyse Hutchinson, Joyce Cleary, John W. Toumbourou, Ann V. Sanson & Craig A. Olsson - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Background: When adolescent boys experience close, secure relationships with their parents and peers, the implications are potentially far reaching, including lower levels of mental health problems in adolescence and young adulthood. Here we use rare prospective intergenerational data to extend our understanding of the impact of adolescent attachments on subsequent postpartum mental health problems in early fatherhood. Methods: At age 17–18 years, we used an abbreviated Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment to assess trust, communication, and alienation reported by 270 male (...)

Webinar report: stakeholder perspectives on informed consent for the use of genomic data by commercial entities.Baergen Schultz, Francis E. Agamah, Cornelius Ewuoso, Ebony B. Madden, Jennifer Troyer, Michelle Skelton & Erisa Mwaka - 2024 - Journal of Medical Ethics 50 (1):57-61.
In July 2020, the H3Africa Ethics and Community Engagement (E&CE) Working Group organised a webinar with ethics committee members and biomedical researchers from various African institutions throughout the Continent to discuss the issue of whether and how biological samples for scientific research may be accessed by commercial entities when broad consents obtained for the samples are silent. 128 people including Research Ethics Committee members (10), H3Africa researchers (46) including members of the E&CE working group, biomedical researchers not associated with H3Africa (...)

Reimagining Critical Race Theory in Education: Mental Health, Healing, and the Pathway to Liberatory Praxis.Ebony O. McGee & David Stovall - 2015 - Educational Theory 65 (5):491-511.
Long-standing theoretical education frameworks and methodologies have failed to provide space for the role mental health can play in mediating educational consequences. To illustrate the need for such space, Ebony McGee and David Stovall highlight the voices of black undergraduates they have served in the capacities of teacher, researcher, and mentor. Building from the theoretical contributions of intellectual giants like Frantz Fanon and W. E. B. Du Bois, the authors attempt to connect oppressive social systems to the psyche of (...)

Overestimating the intensity of negative feelings in autobiographical memory: evidence from the 9/11 attack and COVID-19 pandemic. [REVIEW]Juan Castillo, Haoxue Fan, Olivia T. Karaman, Jocelyn Shu, Yoann Stussi, M. Alexandra Kredlow, Sophia Vranos, Javiera P. Oyarzún, Hayley M. Dorfman, Deshawn Chatman Sambrano, Robert Meksin, William Hirst & Elizabeth A. Phelps - 2024 - Cognition and Emotion 38 (7):1048-1063.
When recalling autobiographical events, people not only retrieve event details but also the feelings they experienced. The current study examined whether people are able to consistently recall the intensity of past feelings associated with two consequential and negatively valenced events, i.e. the 9/11 attack (N = 769) and the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 726). By comparing experienced and recalled intensities of negative feelings, we discovered that people systematically recall a higher intensity of negative feelings than initially reported – overestimating the (...)

The neural substrates of recollection and familiarity.Andrew P. Yonelinas, Neal E. A. Kroll, Ian G. Dobbins, Michele Lazzara & Robert T. Knight - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (3):468-469.
Aggleton & Brown argue that a hippocampal-anterior thalamic system supports the “recollection” of contextual information about previous events, and that a separate perirhinal-medial dorsal thalamic system supports detection of stimulus “familiarity.” Although there is a growing body of human literature that is in agreement with these claims, when recollection and familiarity have been examined in amnesics using the process dissociation or the remember/know procedures, the results do not seem to provide consistent support. We reexamine these studies and describe the results (...)

    Computer-Assisted Decision Making in Medicine.J. C. Kunz, E. H. Shortliffe, B. G. Buchanan & E. A. Feigenbaum - 1984 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 9 (2):135-160.
This article reviews the strengths and limitations of five major paradigms of medical computer-assisted decision making (CADM): (1) clinical algorithms, (2) statistical analysis of collections of patient data, (3) mathematical models of physical processes, (4) decision analysis, and (5) symbolic reasoning or artificial intelligence (Al). No one technique is best for all applications, and there is recent promising work which combines two or more established techniques. We emphasize both the inherent power of symbolic reasoning and the promise of artificial intelligence (...)

    Induction of a phosphomannosyl binding lectin activity in Giardia.Honorine D. Ward, Gerald T. Keusch & Miercio E. A. Pereira - 1990 - Bioessays 12 (5):211-215.
Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite that causes widespread diarrheal disease, expresses a surface membrane associated lectin, taglin, which is specifically activated by limited proteolysis with trypsin, a protease that is present in abundance at the site of infection. When activated, taglin agglutinates enterocytes which are the cells to which the parasite adheres in vivo, and in addition, binds to isolated brush border membranes of these cells. These findings suggest that this lectin may be involved in the host‐parasite interaction. Taglin is (...)

Movement dynamics and the environment to be perceived.Gary E. Riccio, Richard E. A. van Emmerik & Brian T. Peters - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (2):237-238.
In perception science, an alternative to focusing on individual sensory systems is to describe the environment to be perceived. We focus on the emergent dynamics of human-environment interactions as an important category of the environment to be perceived. We argue that information about such dynamics is available in subtle patterns of movement variability that, of necessity, stimulate multiple sensory systems.

How the Economy Works: Confidence, Crashes, and Self-Fulfilling Prophecies.Roger E. A. Farmer - 2010 - Oxford University Press USA.
"Of all the economic bubbles that have been pricked," the editors of The Economist recently observed, "few have burst more spectacularly than the reputation of economics itself." Indeed, the financial crisis that crested in 2008 destroyed the credibility of the economic thinking that had guided policymakers for a generation. But what will take its place? In How the Economy Works, one of our leading economists provides a jargon-free exploration of the current crisis, offering a powerful argument for how economics must (...)

Culturology Is Not a Science, But an Intellectual Movement.E. A. Orlova - 2003 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 41 (4):75-78.
I would like to stress Vadim Mikhailovich's [Mezhuev's] position and clarify our conversation about culturology. It is constantly repeated that culturology is a science. It is my profound conviction that culturology is not a science. Culturology is a distinctive phenomenon of Russian culture and represents a certain intellectual movement. If one briefly surveys the history of its emergence, its philosophical origin becomes obvious. This intellectual movement consists of three levels, if one takes into account the "-logy" ending. First, the philosophical (...)
